Carol Marin

Carol Marin has an extensive musical background. For seventeen years she maintained an active music studio in the Chicago area, teaching musical theatre, classical and popular vocal styles and piano to students of all ages. She was on the faculty of the Metropolis Performing Arts Center, and the Arlington Music School, and was owner of the Center for Musical Arts. Several of her former students are now successfully pursuing Musical Theatre careers. Carol holds a Master of Music degree in vocal performance from Northwestern University and a Bachelor of Music from Converse College. Besides teaching endeavors in Chicago, Carol performed with Light Opera Works, Grant Park Symphony and Piccolo Opera, directed the Northbrook Children's Theatre and Grace Chapel Choir, was a judge for the Chicago NATS auditions, organized "Moving to the Music", a musical theatre performance workshop, and developed a sight-singing course for use in the private voice studio.

Lessons with Carol

Voice: 11 and up (Younger students may be accepted by audition)

There is no such thing as a one-size fits-all vocal technique. Carol enjoys working with a wide range of students from the beginner to the seasoned professional. Each student brings a different set of experiences and a unique voice and talent. As a teacher, Carol creates an atmosphere of mutual respect and open communication. Because singing is such a personal expression, Carol believes it is of the utmost importance to feel comfortable and free to experiment.

Carol’s goal as a teacher is to guide each student toward their vocal potential by building on their strengths. At each lesson, time will be devoted to vocal scales and exercises to build strength and coordination, increase range and improve tone quality. Proper breathing techniques, diction, projection, stage presence and expression are stressed. Of course, the fun part of singing is working on songs and seeing firsthand how the vocal techniques apply and what a difference it makes in the sound. Carol enjoys working with students on a wide range of repertoire including, musical theatre, classical and popular styles. Students are always encouraged to bring to lessons any audition/performance repertoire they may need to prepare. For the student who wants to pursue singing seriously Carol incorporates sight-reading studies and will arrange a combination voice/piano lesson for those wanting to hone their musicianship and keyboard skills.

Piano:  6 and up

For piano students, Carol’s focus is on note-reading, ear training, technique and music theory. She generally starts students with method books and adds other repertoire as the student progresses. Lessons are easy going and weekly assignments are manageable. Carol enjoys working with beginners of all ages or those that are returning to lessons no matter their age or experience. Adult beginners are welcome!

Practice: In order to get the most from your vocal or piano studies, Carol recommends practicing at least 4-5 days a week for 30 minutes per day. Consistency is the key so a little time spent practicing daily goes a long way.
