How much do lessons cost? Most of our teachers are charging $88 a month. That is for a 30 minute private lesson each week of the month. (Each teacher sets their own rate and currently that rate ranges from $80-$104 per month). You can find each teacher’s tuition rate on their own info page.
When are annual fees due? Annual fees ($35 per household) are collected at your first lesson. From then onwards, annual fees are due in January of each year. If you joined the school in October, November or December, you will not be asked to pay the annual fee the following January.
How do I enroll? The first step is to decide on an instructor. Calling or emailing the school is an easy and efficient way to get help in narrowing down your field of choices. Once an instructor is decided upon, that person will get in contact with you to answer further questions and to schedule a lesson time. At your first lesson, wait for your instructor in the lobby. During your first lesson you will be asked to fill out a brief enrollment form which you can give back to your instructor or turn in to the school office.
How should I pick a teacher? Although sometimes teachers are decided upon based solely on their schedule and availability, you should consider what characteristics in a teacher are best suited for the student. Sometimes students respond to a particular gender better than the other or perhaps they need a very structured environment. The office personnel will ask you these questions to help narrow the field of instructors. You will also be asked if the student is interested in a particular style of music or if he/she is wanting to learn a particular technique.
Where can I park? Downtown, you can park in our big gravel lot, on the West side of our building. You may also use the metered parking along the building. At our West Asheville location, park in the lot right outside the door.
When is tuition due? Tuition is due the last week of the month which pays for the upcoming month.
Can I get lessons longer than a half hour or more frequent than once a week? Absolutely! We recommend half hour lessons, once a week for beginners. Those with more experience will probably desire longer or more frequent lessons. Ask your teacher.
How long do I have to take lessons before I’m good? This is a great question that is hard to answer. Many facets determine the answer including: How bad do you want to be good? Do you have natural ability? (and the biggie...) How much do you intend to practice regularly?
How much will I have to practice? This is a good question for your prospective teacher. Typically younger beginners will start out at 20 minutes a day. A practice regime of 30 minutes each day will yield good results; 45 minutes a day, even better! More important than the amount of time you practice, is the consistency of practice. Practicing everyday for 10 minutes is considerably better than practicing once in a week for 70 minutes. Unlike history tests, you can’t “cram” for music lessons.
When/where are recitals? Recitals are held three times a year, usually in early October, mid-December and mid-May. They are optional for students. Usually one of the four or five recitals held in the day will be dedicated to our adult students. Recitals are held on the UNCA campus in Lipinski Hall, room 018.
Who do I make checks out to? Checks for tuition (each month) will be made out to the instructor. Checks for the annual fee should be made out to the Asheville Music School.
What forms of payments to you accept? Cash and Checks.
Are there lessons offered in the summer? Absolutely, summer is a great time for lessons. We will gladly work around your vacation and camp schedules.
Are gift certificate available? Yes, call or email the office for a time to get a gift certificate. They are available in any amount for any instructor.
